EVENT DESCRIPTION

Helen is interested in food in India. Helen is traveling to India in Nov/Dec. to investigate stories dealing with the broad spectrum of food and agricultural issues there, including alternatives to commercial agriculture, such as home gardens, agroforestry and silviculture, particularly where these can help solve the problems of a vast and growing population and the need to meet targets under the Paris Climate Agreement.

Other interests include deforestation and reforestation, land and gender issues concerning ownership and tenure, and aquaculture. She is aware of the work of Vandana Shiva, but is also interested in more mainstream alternatives. To date, she has plans to visit home gardens in Kerala, but maybe also projects of Kamal Bawa (ATREE) in the Darjeeling Hills. She is looking for academics/researchers (experts in Indian agriculture or the issues the country is facing) here who can contribute to the stories she will report on there, including suggestions for what and who she should visit/investigate there.

Candidates to pitch to Helen at 2 pm ET on Friday, Oct. 28, will be selected from a rehearsal event on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 2pm ET. Newswise editors will make selections to meet with Helen based on the topic and quality of the pitch.
